Eryngium foetidum L.

Caulescent biennial herb, slender, erect, and aromatic; stems 15–40 cm tall, furrowed, mostly solitary, and dichasially branched above. Leaves oblanceolate-oblong in outline, 4–12 cm long, 1–2.5 cm broad, apex obtuse, base cuneate, sessile, and glabrous; margins crenate to finely spinosely-serrate; venation pinnately reticulate. Inflorescence capitate with cylindrical heads (4–10 mm long, 3–5 mm broad) arranged in dichasia; involucral bracts 5–7, linear-lanceolate, 1–3 cm long, foliaceous, spreading and reflexed with a few spiny teeth, greatly exceeding the heads; involucel bractlets 2–3 mm long, exceeding the fruit. Flowers numerous; sepals erect, lanceolate, persistent, and longer than the petals; petals greenish-white, oblanceolate to obovate, erect, and clawed. Ovary ovoid with short, filiform, divaricate styles slightly exceeding the sepals; stigmas capitate. Fruit ovoid, 1–1.5 mm long, 0.5–0.75 mm broad, densely papillose.
