Herb with a rhizome 1/4–3/4 cm thick, which is slenderer in submerged specimens with longer internodes. Runners are 2–10 cm long, rather thick and sometimes rugged. Leaves have petioles 5–20 cm long; the blade is smooth, ovate to narrowly ovate, measuring (0.5) 0.8–1.5 (2.0) x (1) 2–7 (12) cm. The upper leaf surface is green, ranging from dull to shining, while the lower surface is paler with inconspicuous venation; the apex is acute to acuminate, the base is attenuate to almost cordate, and the margin is entire.The spathe is 4–10 (20) cm long and brownish on the outside. The spathe kettle is 0.6–1.5 cm long with a reddish-purple interior in the upper part; the tube is 1.5–6 (15) cm long. The spathe limb is (1) 1.5–3 (5) cm long, suberect and twisted or somewhat recurved (only rarely obliquely twisted); its surface ranges from smooth to rough-warty and its color is purple (rarely greenish). It is characterized by a purple (occasionally yellowish) collar. The spadix is approximately 1 cm long, bearing 4–7 yellowish female flowers with subovate stigmas and 40–60 male flowers with sterile pollen.
