Herb 0.3-1.5 m tall, glabrous except for corolla, stem robust, simple, ascending to erect, green to purple-blotched with swollen nodes when young. Leaves very varied in shape from simple, palmately trifoliolate or more rarely pinnately 5-foliolate, at times on same plant, dense in upper part of older plants, at times almost absent during anthesis; lamina 5-20 x 2.5-5 (-8) cm, ovate-oblong, obtuse or crenate, frequently oblique at base, fleshy, purple-margined; petiole 1.5-10 cm long, base subamplexicaul, broad. Cymes paniculate, 10—25 (-80) cm long including peduncle, lax, usually many-pendulous-flowered. Pedi cel 0.8-1.5 cm long, frequently appearing longer due to absence of 2 minute bracteoles at obscure geniculation or node, which at times bears further small but usually underdeveloped flowers. Calyx 2.5—4 cm long, lobed to above midway, appearing up to 1.5 cm wide when dried, glabrous, green tinged with purple, lobes 5-10 mm long, 2.5-7 mm wide at base, broadly triangular, acuminate. Corolla up to 5 cm long, constricted at or below middle, much folded at subglobose base which subdensely glandular especially below, green at base, pink to reddish purple above, lobes 1-1.25 x 0.4 cm, oblong, sharply acute or acuminate. Filaments 3-3.25 cm long, filamentous; anthers 1.5-2 mm long, barely exserted. Styles to 3 mm long. Follicle up to 1.5 cm long. (FOC)
