Usually trees, some species shrubs only, evergreen or deciduous; branches in evergreen species sympodial, branching from axil of uppermost leaf below inflorescence or solitary flower, monopodial in deciduous species. Leaf-scars either completely amplexicaul or clasping up to 3/4 of branch. Leaves spirally arranged, simple, entire, undulate or distinctly serrate at margin, pinnately nerved; petioles channelled above, in some species with completely amplexicaul caducous wings. Flowers solitary or in few—(up to 20)—flowered racemose inflorescences, terminal (subsequently leaf-opposed lateral) or in few— (up to 7)—flowered fascicles on the branches below the leaves. Sepals usually 5, persistent in fruit. Petals 5, much larger than sepals, early caducous. Stamens numerous, all of the same length or the innermost ones distinctly longer, in some species the outer ones staminodial; anthers linear, the cells opening with a terminal pore. Carpels 4—20, attached to a conical receptacle, otherwise free, each with 5—80 ovules attached to 2 marginal adaxial placentae; styles linear, curved outward. Pseudocarps consisting of gynoecium and persistent calyx, the enlarged fleshy sepals permanently enclosing the gynoecium or spreading on maturity. Fruiting carpels indehiscent or spreading star-like on maturity. SeedS 1—few, dark brown to black, arillate or exarillate. (FOC)
