Perennial, stemless herbs; rootstocks elongated, up to 6.0 cm, woody. Leaves obovate-lanceolate, 10—30 x 2.5—5.6 cm, deep green above, pale green below, acute or acuminate, much attenuate below, base auriculate, margin crenate-toothed or strongly serrate, more or less hirsute above, adpressed hairy on the veins beneath; petioles 2.5—3.5 cm long, winged. Racemes short, subsessile, many—flowered. Flowers large, 7—8 mm across, yellow; pedicels c. 4 cm long, hirsute or with long spreading hairs. Sepals 5, ovate, patent, pale-green to purplish, hirsute without. Petals 5, obovate. Stamens c. 40 in 3 bundles, alternating with the carpels. Carpels 3, coherent on the adaxial side; styles linear, recurved; ovules many. Follicles ovoid, dehiscing irregularly. Seeds with membranous aril. (FOC)
