Large, often straggling shrubs or small trees up to 8 m tall; branches cylindric, hoary, at length glabrate. Leaves ovate or ovate-oblong or elliptic, 10—20 x 5—12 cm, 18—25-nerved, obtuse to acute at apex, obtuse, rounded or retuse at base, sometimes acute at either end, glabrous, hoary or puberulous on the veins beneath, margin sinuate-dentate; serratures mucronate; petioles 5—12 mm long, channelled above. Inflorescences usually terminal spreading panicles, sometimes axillary also in the upper few leaves, up to 40 x 30 cm many-flowered (up to 500 or more). Flowers 10—14mm across; bi-bracteolate; bracts sericeous on both sides. Sepals 5, coriaceous, sericeous on both sides, 6—8 x 4—5 mm, 3 outer longer than 2 inner and inner wider than the 3 outer ones. Petals usually 4, crisped, oblong, caducous. Stamens c. 25—30, the filament column c. 1 mm long; anthers c. 4 mm long. Carpels c. 2 mm long with 4 mm long styles, when dehisced c. 4 x 4 mm. (FOC)
