Robust, perennial, spiny herb resembling species of Lasia in general habit. Stem short and stout, often partly creeping or erect at the base. Petioles stout, densely armed with prickles. Leaves consistently sagittate (arrowhead-shaped); petioles long and robust; leaf blade large, coriaceous, with the upper surface green and marked by reddish primary veins, while the lower surface has a distinctive coppery sheen. Apex acute to acuminate; basal lobes well developed and spreading; margins entire. Inflorescence borne on a stout peduncle; spathe enclosing a spadix. Female flowers situated at the basal portion of the spadix, male flowers above. Ovaries multilocular and never with a single pendulous ovule, a diagnostic character distinguishing the species from Lasia. Fruits berries; seeds several.
