Large terrestrial, stoloniferous herb reaching 1–2 m in height, spreading via subterranean stolons. The plant forms a stiff rosette measuring 0.75–1 m in diameter, consisting of 30–60 leaves. Individual leaves are 1–2 m long and 3–4 cm wide; their margins are armed with distant hooked spines (2–6 cm long) that typically point toward the leaf apex. The leaf surface is dark green and glabrous above, while the underside is paler green and downy due to scales and hairs arranged in regular parallel rows. The inflorescence is an erect, stalked, and stout panicle, 40–60 cm long, which arises from an involucre of bright red-orange bracts. It is densely white-farinose and composed of 20–25 branchlets, each bearing 5–10 flowers. Flowers are perfect with 6 stamens that are shorter than the petals. The fruit is a simple, many-seeded, indehiscent berry. The seeds are flat and wingless
