Slender to moderate, clustering, climbing rattan palm reaching 7–15 m in height. The stem diameter with the leaf sheath is 2.5–5 cm, while the diameter of the cane itself is approximately 1.5 cm. Internodes are 30–40 cm long and infrequently root at the nodes. Leaves are pinnate, measuring 1–2 m long and 0.5 m wide, featuring regular leaflets that are small (less than 50 cm long). The leaf sheath is pale green and armed with scattered erect spines (1–2.5 cm long) and spinules (5 mm long), with long spicules (5–10 cm long) crowded at its base. A key diagnostic feature is the well-developed ocrea, which is more than 5 cm long and not covered in spines. The palm produces a flagellum up to 3 m long, which is armed with distant groups of grapnel spines. The inflorescence is also flagelliform, reaching up to 2 m in length, with a slender, flattened, pendulous peduncle.
