Unarmed tree 3—15 m tall described by Roxburgh as having a short trunk and being much branched above; bark brownish or grey, smooth; branchlets pubescent when young. Leaves reddish when young, elliptic, ovate-elliptic or ovate-oblong, 8—25 cm long, 4—12.5 cm wide, acuminate at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, coarsely crenate, glossy above, glabrous save for pubescent midrib; petiole 0.8—1.2 cm long, pubescent. Inflorescence 1—1.5 cm long, pubescent, ± 5-flowered; pedicels 4—10 mm long; bracts small, deciduous. Sepals (3)4—5, green, broadly ovate, 2—2.5 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, pubescent or ± glabrous. Stamens 15—25; disk fleshy, 6—8 lobed. Ovary ovoid; styles 4—5; stigma discoid or cuneate, bilobed.
