Evergreen herb with a rhizome almost 1 cm thick and rough; runners are rough and usually short (2–5 cm), giving the plant an almost caespitose appearance. Leaves have petioles 3–10 (15) cm long; the blade is more or less rough, elliptic to ovate, measuring 1.5–4 x 3–8 cm. The upper leaf surface ranges from green to marbled green or marbled purple, while the lower surface is often paler green with conspicuous veins; the apex is obtuse, the base is cordate, and the margin is finely undulate. The spathe is 5–10 cm long, whitish on the outside and brownish-greenish towards the apex. The spathe kettle is 1.0–1.5 cm long with red spots in the upper part of the interior; the tube is 2–7 cm long and also features red spots inside. The spathe limb is 2–5 cm long, twisted, white with red spots (which are sometimes inconspicuous), and is characterized by a very rough surface and often a long tail. The spadix is 1.0–1.5 cm long, bearing 5–8 pistils with rounded stigmas and 20–30 male flowers; olfactory bodies are irregularly rounded and whitish.
