Tree up to 25 m high and 70 cm diameter.; bark smooth and black, peeling off at the base of the bole in very large, thick plates; buttresses small. Leaves alternate, oblong, glabrous. Flowers dioecious; male flowers in clusters of three to seven; calyx campanulate, 4-lobed, 3–4 mm long, with minute black hairs on the outside and densely black-haired inside; female flowers solitary or in pairs with a similar calyx and four styles. Fruit a globose berry up to 7 cm diameter., covered with a rusty brown scurvy tomentum that is easily rubbed off. Fruiting calyx with four reflexed, stiff, coriaceous lobes 4–10 mm long, pointing downward and black-haired on the inner surface. Seeds 2.5 x 1.5 cm; endosperm equable.
