Numerous small capitula are borne in terminal and axillary panicles, each enclosed by several series of hairy involucral bracts. The outer florets are numerous and female, while the inner florets are bisexual, with corollas pink to purplish or occasionally whitish. The fruit is a small cylindrical, pubescent achene, crowned with a persistent white pappus of slender bristles that facilitates wind dispersal. The entire plant is characteristically aromatic when crushed and commonly grows in open, disturbed, or seasonally moist habitats.
