Large much-branched shrub or small tree c. 5 m tall. Bark dark grey. Twigs pubescent. Buds covered with scales. Leaf 1.5-9 x 0.8-4 cm, elliptic, ovate, lanceolate or rotund, acuminate or rounded at apex, acute, obtuse or rounded at base, stiff, coriaceous, glabrous on both surfaces, serrate, with prominent veins beneath. Petiole 1-5 mm long. Racemes axillary or terminal. Peduncle 2-10 mm long, slightly pubescent. Pedicel 6-10 mm long, slender. Bracts c. 2 mm to 4.5 cm long, usually deciduous. Bracteoles 2. Flowers regular, somewhat nodding. Calyx glabrous or puberulous, cup-shaped, sepals connate below for c. 1.5 - 2 mm, lobes triangular, acute, ciliate, c. 1.5 mm long. Corolla 8-14 mm long, 4-8 mm wide, 5-angled, tubular-urceolate, white to bright dark pink, lobes 1-3 mm long, recurved. Filaments 2.5-3 mm long, pubescent, white or pink below, yellow-brown distally. Anthers yellow-brown, c. 2 mm long, each anther lobe prolonged above into a tube c. 3 mm long, dilated at the top and ending in an obliquely placed pore, and 2 awns abaxially at the base 0.5-2 mm long, narrow, pointed, yellow-brown. Ovary with a yellow disc at the top, with 5 carpels and 5 loculi with several ovules in each. Style 8-10 mm long, greenish distally, persistent. Stigma subcapitate. Berry subglobose, to c. 12 mm broad, smooth, glabrous, red. Seeds few, ovoid, compressed, brown, to c. 3 mm long, marked with reticulations. (FOC)
