Rosetted perennial, acaulescent or with short, thick, stout stems. Leaves 1–2 m long, broadest above midway, to 25 cm or more wide, linear-oblong, thick, fleshy, and fibrous; broadened bases frequently covering much of stem; margin liberally and regularly armed at about 1–1.5 cm distance with black or dark-coloured, patent or recurved prickles; terminal spine present. Inflorescence paniculate, frequently to several metres tall; rhachis with spine-tipped bracts, often bulbiferous. Flowers large, erect, yellow or green; perianth tubular at base; stamens exserted, filaments slender; style elongate, stigma 3-lobed. Fruit a dehiscent, loculicidal capsule. Seeds flattened, black
